rivers glossary


SOURCE - The start of a river.

MOUTH - The end of a river.

CHANNEL - The area between the river banks where the water flows.

BASIN - The area of land that is drained by a river and its tributaries.

TRIBUTARY - A stream or river that feeds into a larger river or lake.

STREAM -  small, narrow river.

ESTUARY - The area where rivers spread out. Occurs near or at the mouth of a river, where the tide meets the current and the fresh and salt waters mix.

SILT - Tiny pieces of sand or rocks. These are dropped by the river when the current is slow. Usually near the mouth.

DELTA - An area of sediment built up at the mouth of a river.

DISCHARGE - Amount of water flowing in a river per second in a particular place.

LENGTH - The distance between the source and the mouth of a river.

REGIME - The discharge of a river during certain time, usually durina a year.

STEEP- the uneven route of the river is high.

RAVINE- A long, deep narrow gully formed by running water.
