Time in history

Each civilization counts time from an important event. Our civilization takes as reference the birth of Christ, which is year 1.

The years before this event are called B.C. (before Christ), and we count them backward. 

The years after that event are called A.D. (Anno Domini which means year of our Lord in Latin).

There is not year 0, or century 0.
